Australian wine regions are food trips when you pair them with a city and a meal. From Adelaide the usual first regions are Barossa, McLaren Vale, and the Adelaide Hills. From Melbourne, the Yarra Valley is the close cool-climate run. From Perth, Margaret River is an overnight more than an afternoon. From Sydney, the Hunter is the historic nearby map. From Hobart, Tasmania’s cool-climate vineyards sit close.
Official geography lives with Wine Australia and state tourism sites. This guide will not invent a cellar-door score. Designate a driver or use a licensed operator. Drink responsibly.

Pair one region with one city
Adelaide is the compact food-and-wine capital. Barossa is about an hour north in ordinary traffic — a classic shiraz map. McLaren Vale is a similar class of drive south, more coastal. The Hills are closer and cooler. See Adelaide food-and-wine weekend.
Melbourne → Yarra Valley. Typically an hour-class drive depending on traffic. Mornington Peninsula is the coastal-adjacent alternative. Do not add both plus a Fitzroy dinner.
Perth → Margaret River. On the order of three hours south. Overnight. Not a Perth suburb.
Sydney → Hunter Valley. The historic nearby GI. A long day or an overnight. Not Circular Quay.
Hobart → Coal River, Derwent, and further. Cool-climate; pair with Salamanca if it is Saturday.
Canberra sits near cool-climate NSW/ACT vineyards. A short-stay extra, not a Barossa substitute.
Food, not only cellar doors
Modern Australian menus in these regions often read like the GI map. Produce changes with harvest. Markets in the nearest city still matter on the morning you leave.
A food tour or a licensed wine tour is useful when you do not want to drive. This site does not sell them.
How to use this page

GI names that help a conversation
Barossa, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Clare, Yarra, Mornington, Hunter, Margaret River, Great Southern, Tamar, Coal River, Canberra District. Those are geographic indications, not medals. Official maps live with Wine Australia. We will not invent a cellar-door scorecard.
Sparkling, shiraz, riesling, chardonnay, cabernet — styles follow climate more than a blog list. Ask the producer what they actually pour this year.
Food on the same day
Book lunch before you book a fifth tasting. Modern Australian rooms in the regions often read like the GI. Produce changes at harvest. A food tour or wine tour is editorial geography here — we do not sell seats.
Drink responsibly. Designate a driver. That is a safety note, not a slogan.
A responsible day
One region. A booked lunch. A designated driver or a licensed operator. Two or three cellar doors, not seven. Water. An end time. That is a food-and-wine day. Collecting Clare and Barossa and the Hills before dinner is a driving day.
Official GI maps: Wine Australia. State tourism sites add visitor logistics. We will not invent a cellar-door score. Adelaide remains the compact pairing. Melbourne pairs with the Yarra. Perth pairs with Margaret River as an overnight.
