Australian café culture is a planning mode, not a trophy. Read the board. House recipes vary. This glossary is a starting map. The long guide is Australian café culture.

The useful orders
Flat white. Milk coffee, usually a double espresso, smaller than many lattes. The default milk coffee in many rooms.
Long black. Espresso lengthened with hot water. Not a drip filter. Not an Americano by another city’s rules — ask if you care about the pour.
Piccolo. A short milk coffee. Useful if you want strength without a large cup.
Latte / cappuccino. Widely available. Foam and cup size vary.
Filter / batch. Increasingly common. Ask what is on and how it was brewed.
Magic. A Melbourne-associated short milk coffee in some rooms. Not universal. If it is not on the board, do not invent it.
Origin stories for the flat white are contested between Australian and New Zealand cafés. What matters is the cup in front of you.
Where to drink it
Melbourne is unusually dense — laneways, neighbourhood roasters, brunch as a plan. Sydney treats coffee as infrastructure. Other capitals copied the queue. We will not invent a café ranking.
How to use a Saturday
Pick one neighbourhood. Arrive early or book. Pair with the Melbourne or Sydney precinct map. Do not add a second suburb because a reel said so.
Allergen and milk-alternative questions belong to the café. This is not medical advice. See vegetarian if the plate is the point, not the cup.
What not to perform
You do not need to debate the origin of the flat white at the till. You do not need to order a magic if it is not on the board. You do not need a trophy roaster. Read the board. Sit down if the café is the point.
Melbourne is the dense map. Sydney is infrastructure. Other capitals copied the queue. Brunch is the meal overlay. We will not invent a café ranking.
Milk alternatives are a venue question. This is not medical advice. Pair with the coffee hub and a city precinct map.
